Description

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Middle Tennessee has already seen more tornadoes within the first four months of 2025 than the average year. However, it's not just in Tennessee — the entire mid-south has been battered with tornadoes.

The area called Tornado Alley stretches from Texas to the Dakotas, passing through Missouri and Iowa. Traditionally, this line of states sees the most tornadoes. However, within the last 20 years, the term Dixie Alley has been used for the mid-south and some southeastern states. So far this year, Dixie Alley has seen many more tornadoes than Tornado Alley.

Check out the graphic below to see all the tornado tracks confirmed by the National Weather Service in 2025:

There are a couple of areas that stand out. Mississippi/Alabama, and the area from Northeast Arkansas through Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Indiana. None of these areas are in Tornado Alley.

Though Mississippi, Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana stand out for their tracks, none of those are Tornado Alley states.

This might seem strange, but it's normal for this time of year. Peak tornado season for Dixie Alley is April, while areas farther north and west typically see more tornadoes in May and June.

Tornado season is just getting started for the Tornado Alley states of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas.

This is good news for those living in Dixie Alley, including residents in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. Tornado season starts to wind down in May, and by June, tornadoes become rare.
