BUTLER, Tenn. (WKRN) — After surviving a hurricane last fall, one East Tennessee man is now paying it forward.

He is helping flood victims in Texas by doing exactly what his community once did for him: show up.

Darren Clark, owner of Camp Faith in Butler and a volunteer firefighter with the Elk Mills Fire Department, said Hurricane Helene left behind more than just damage — it left behind perspective.

"I thought since I came here, 2,100 feet above sea level, I was done with hurricanes," Clark said. "It was worse than anything I experienced in Florida. This area got humbled, and the community came together. We're still rebuilding."

With the help of his friend Michael Rice, they organized a trailer full of donated supplies —everything from canned goods and sanitary items to shovels and cleaning products.

Clark helped pack the trailer in Tennessee, and Rice drove it nearly 1,000 miles south to deliver the supplies to Notre Dame Catholic Church, a distribution site helping families impacted by floodwaters.

"He said if I was going to go down there, we might as well load a trailer. And we did,” Rice told News 2. “One man down there said it was exactly what they needed.”

Clark said the gesture is something he plans to continue.

“Every day, it feels like another city is underwater,” he said. “We received so much during our own recovery. It’s the right thing to do — to take care of one another.”

Another trailer is already being prepped in Elk Mills, ready to respond to the next disaster.
