NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Woodbine Neighborhood Association organizes an annual cleanup with the Tennessee Environmental Council — and it's that time of year once again.
Some Woodbine residents told News 2 that as trash spills off trucks, it accumulates along the streets. Old mattresses, old televisions and rugs have been pulled from area creek beds. McKenzie Weaver, President of the Woodbine Neighborhood Association, said that while people may not think it's a huge deal, over time litter breaks down into microplastics that harm the community.
“Doing litter cleanups like this is just a great way to help capture as much as we can and get it into a way stream that can properly absorb that material and take it out of our crucial waterways and ecosystems,” Weaver said.
CEO of the Tennessee Environmental Council, Jeffrey Barrie, organizes litter cleanups year-round around different locations. Barrie said that volunteers can feel good about making a difference in the environment and in neighborhoods.
“You will have made a difference,” Barrie said. “You’ll see how much you’ve collected over that period of time and participants walk away feeling better that they’ve done something good for their community, our environment Tennessee and Nashville.”
Weaver added that litter cleanups like this are a great way for neighbors, both within Woodbine and nearby, to get to know each other and bond. The cleanup is a way to connect with like-minded people who want to do good for Nashville.
This year, the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure gave the Woodbine Neighborhood Association daffodil bulbs and wildflower seeds. Weaver said they’ll send neighbors out with a bag of daffodil bulbs to start planting in community spaces, which will help beautify the neighborhood.
The cleanup will be held Saturday, Oct. 4 from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 am at The Church at Woodbine. Neighborhood leaders will provide safety equipment like gloves and hats for the event. Accommodations will be made for anyone physically unable to pick up litter or walk long distances.
An ice cream social will be held at The Bee Social at 11:45 a.m. directly after the litter cleanup for volunteers.
