NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — For its 11th year, the Hispanic Family Foundation made sure thousands of children were equipped with brand new school supplies during an event in South Nashville Saturday.
"Last year, we did over 3,200 backpacks full of school supplies, and now this year, we're prepared for 3,700 kids to come through, because the need was still so great," Diane Janbakhsh, executive director of the Hispanic Family Foundation, told News 2.
With the help of local sponsors, the foundation gives away all kinds of back to school essentials such as folders, notebooks, pencils, and other learning materials to make sure students have a positive start to the school year.
"We know that by saving families $120 per kid to go back to school with some of these supplies that are so expensive, and to have good quality of the supplies, it's going to help them be able to allocate their funding towards food to put on their table or to pay their rent or their light bill because things are tight," Janbakhsh explained.
The Hispanic Family Foundation partners with Metro Nashville Public Schools every year to gather a list of everything students might need.
"I love to see the smiles on their faces and the smiles on their parents' faces. There's a relief that you see on the parents' faces when they're coming through the lines, and then for the kids, they're just excited because it's something to smell the new paper or to smell the box of crayons and things that we take for granted," Janbakhsh added.
The Hispanic Family Foundation plans for this event all year long, so if you'd like to donate or volunteer, you can reach out to them at https://hffus.org/
