Description
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) -- The Williamson County Sheriff's Office and the Franklin Police Department teamed up last week to capture a teenager clocked driving 110 mph.
It all started during the early morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 28, when Williamson County deputies chased a Honda Civic along Interstate 65 South. Investigators reported the car reached speeds of up to 110 mph.
When the vehicle darted off I-65, deputies backd off because of the excessive speeds. However, the driver -- later identified as 18-year-old Ryel Haynes of Antioch -- reportedly got off at Peytonsville Road and turned onto Pratt Lane at a high rate of speed.
Pratt Lane is a quiet country road that parallels the interstate and runs behind the Ramsey Solutions building, but there's only one way in and one way out.
Even though there is a sign indicating that, it's doubtful someone could see that sign while speeding along the road in the dark.
According to investigators, the teen missed a sharp turn and crashed. When deputies arrived at the scene of the wreck, body camera footage showed the vehicle wedged between a tree and a fence
Since the car was covered with dirt and dust, law enforcement initially couldn't tell if anyone was inside.
"I can't see nothing," one deputy commented.
"Driver, roll down your window," another deputy ordered in a loud voice.
Authorities quickly determined that Haynes was gone. However, a Franklin patrol unit found the teen walking in a parking lot at the Ramsey facility, just 100 yards from the crash site. He was taken into custody without incident.
A deputy spoke to Haynes while he was in the back of a WCSO vehicle, saying, "Do you understand your rights? You invoked your rights, so it is what it is."
"That is unbelievable, and it's frightening and it's sad," Nancy Puetz, a long-time resident of the area, told News 2.
Puetz said she's originally from Orange County, California, but she's lived in the quiet Williamson County community for the past 19 years. She even remembers when the Ramsey facility was just a field.
The current executive director of the Tennessee International Film Festival told News 2 that neighbors were concerned about speeding incidents in the community even before this pursuit and crash.
"I think it's probably portending things to come. The more people find out about a sleepy little area that they knew nothing about, the more likely they are to return, and again, that's just terribly sad," Puetz explained.
Puetz said the community is quiet, primarily made up of long-time, older residents who know and help one another. She hopes that progress in nearby Franklin is not a root cause of the recent increase in the incidents happening on her street.
Even though authorities captured the young Antioch man involved in last week's incident, Puetz told News 2 she's very concerned about the future of Williamson County.
Meanwhile, Haynes has been charged with speeding, reckless driving, and felony evading arrest.
According to the arrest affidavit, "An Airport ID and temporary Tennessee drivers license was located in the vehicle matching the registered owner. Shortly after, the registered owner was located walking near Ramsey Solutions with a matching TN DL and keys to the vehicle."
The teenager -- who has no prior arrest record in Nashville or Williamson County -- was released from jail on a $3,500 bond. Haynes is due in court on Dec. 4.
