NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Metro Parks officials said the change has been more than a year in the making.

It's designed to make families and individuals feel safer when using the city's 27 community centers.

"Just to be able to have that deterrent of violence in our facilities is so important to us," Metro Parks Assistant Director Stevon Neloms said.

The new safety measures come nearly a year after the death of 34-year-old Alyssa Lokits, who was attacked and killed while running on Mill Creek Greenway.

Police said 29-year-old Paul Park abducted Lokits, dragged her into an overgrown area, attempted to sexually assault her and then shot her, killing her.

Lokits' death sparked outrage and calls for safer public spaces, especially for women who want to exercise outdoors without fear.

"Our goal is to empower women to be active without fear... where women can feel safer while exercising, in honor of Alyssa," her sister-in-law said.

Lokits earned a doctorate in neuroscience from Vanderbilt University. Her family said she had a bright future ahead of her before it was cut short in a moment of violence.

Park officials said this additional security is one way to honor her memory and protect others.

"We value their safety," Neloms said. "From kids to seniors, to adults who come to swim... we want them to feel safe when they walk into our centers."

Metro Parks police already patrol the city's greenways, but leaders said placing armed security inside community centers will add another layer of protection.

"It's important to make sure this was done right," Neloms said. "It's a big deal."

The new security guards will be stationed on Friday, September 5. The guards are funded through the department's operating budget and will work closely with Metro Nashville police and Metro Parks police.
