PEGRAM, Tenn. (WKRN) — Right off of Highway 70 in the small town of Pegram, an artist's paradise.
Sharon Ingram is an artist and owns Mud Puddle Pottery Studio and its adjacent art gallery with her husband. They made the move west from Nashville and opened up shop in Pegram in 2004.
"It's such an artsy group of residents. Both Kingston Springs and Pegram have so many musical arts, visual art, arts folks here," Sharon Ingram said. "It's just a great area; it really is. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I absolutely love it here."
People come from all over Middle Tennessee to take classes such as pottery wheel, handbuilding, sculpture and jewelry.
"Next door, we have the Fiddle & Pick, which is a music center, so we have a little art corner here," Ingram said. "It really is a beautiful community. The residents are wonderful, and we're blessed to have some of them come in our classes and shop with us frequently."
Just down the road from Mud Puddle and Fiddle & Pick is likely the best-known spot in Pegram, Finch's Country Store, a staple in the community since 1971 and approved by the mayor.
"Really enjoy Finch's because they fix my breakfast just about every morning," Pegram Mayor Charles Morehead said.
Morehead took office in 1999, and he's now serving his fifth term. His other job is out on the field. This year, Morehead took over as head football coach at Harpeth High School.
When Morehead moved to Pegram in 1992, he said there were only about 500 homes. Now, the population is more than 2,000 with people moving in from Nashville and out of state.
"It seems like people that moved to Pegram all fall into the same mold of being good neighbors, get along with everybody," Morehead said. "It's peaceful and quiet. We have very little crime in the community as a whole. You get to know everybody, and you're friends with them."
The mayor said business growth has lagged behind partly because land in Pegram is hard to come by and expensive, but Ingram hopes some other small business owners will find their niche and bring some new local spots to the community.
"I would love to see some growth here, so come on, bring some good restaurants. We need that here!" Ingram said.
