BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WKRN) — Metro Council member Olivia Hill said what began as an ordinary night out with her partner turned into a frightening medical emergency. She claimed her drink was drugged.
Hill told News 2 that she and her partner went to a restaurant near her home over Labor Day weekend, a spot they visit regularly. They ordered beers, but this time, the drinks came with frosted glasses.
"It was odd because we never use frosted glasses," Hill said. "I poured mine in and drank about half and remember saying, 'Wow, I feel pretty buzzed after just half a beer.'"
Within minutes, she said her body began to shut down.
"I was dropping food, spilling drinks, slumping over in the booth," Hill said. "I have no memory of leaving. I completely blacked out."
Hill believes she may have been targeted.
"I don't know if it's because of me being trans or a politician. Did they want to film me to discredit me?" she asked. "Or maybe it was as simple as someone seeing my Louis Vuitton purse and thinking they could rob us once we were outside."
Doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center later ran blood tests and checked for stroke and other emergencies. Everything came back clear, but Hill said one test was not performed: screening for GHB, a common date-rape drug.
"One of the things they don't test for is GHB," Hill said. "The Sexual Assault Center does a test for that, but only if a woman reports a sexual assault."
Metro Nashville police told News 2 that the case report is completed due to a lack of evidence. That is, unless Hill pursues further testing. She said the time to do that has already passed. She also claimed many places over Labor Day weekend were not running the tests needed.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center told News 2 in a statement:
The protocol for patient testing requires patients to report their sexual assault to law enforcement to receive testing because the lab where the results are processed is through the TBI Toxicology Lab. Patients are assigned specific contacts to communicate the results of those tests. If a patient reports sexual assaults to law enforcement and consents to testing, they’re able to receive full toxicology testing for GHB, Rohypnol and similar substances.
For patients who do not report to law enforcement, drug testing is very limited due to the limited availability of labs that can run the specific tests. Without law enforcement involvement, per provider’s discretion, a patient may have a urine toxicology screening panel, testing for the most common drugs found in use in the population (marijuana, opiates, amphetamines, cocaine), or potentially an alcohol level drawn if it is relevant to the patient's medical treatment.
