NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A woman is in the hospital after being hit in the same crosswalk where a pedestrian lost her life a few months prior.
Metro Nashville Police say a 22-year-old woman on a bike was hit along 3rd Avenue and Van Buren Street in Germantown Saturday night just after 5:30 p.m.
The driver fled the scene in what police say was a black four-door SUV.
Noah Webb lives in the Germantown area. He was walking his dog Saturday night when he saw two women in the crosswalk near the dog park along Third Avenue.
“I noticed that there was a woman kind of sprawled out on the ground near the crosswalk,” he said. “Her belongings were sort of scattered around her. Her shoes had been knocked off her, and her body was contorted in a way where she was clearly in pain and had broken some bones.”
Webb did not see any drivers stop to try to help the woman. There were just Good Samaritans there who were able to dial 911.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time somebody has been hit along 3rd Avenue in Germantown. Yellow ribbons are lining the road and sidewalk to remember Dorothy Dobbins, who was hit and killed in June while walking her dog.
“It always is a little bit concerning,” resident Dane Beanblosson said. “You have to look both ways and make sure that no cars are coming out at high speed.”
Although there are some signs warning drivers to slow down for pedestrians, it was not enough to stop another tragedy from happening.
Nashville Councilman Jacob Kupin said he is working with leaders to make this and all intersections safer.
“It is heartbreaking and horrifying that another person was badly injured at the same intersection where Dot Dobbins lost her life just a few months ago.
Once again, we find ourselves in a situation where improvements are underway, but not quick enough to prevent horrible injury.
I’ve been in communication with both the police Commander and the Director of the Department of Transportation, who assured me of their continued commitment to making this and all intersections safe.
I’ve asked for immediate improvements, including consideration of a road closure of that block where we work to ensure this is a safe crossing.
My thoughts and prayers, and commitment to action, are with the woman who was injured and her loved ones. We will get this right."

City crews were seen putting lights up at the crosswalk on Monday afternoon. But leaders and residents want to see more change to follow, to better protect bikers and pedestrians.
