NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A final vote tonight could rezone Nashville's Nations neighborhood.
It's been a controversial bill—some neighbors argue that it will bring unwanted growth, while others support more housing.
Despite this, Metro Council has been moving forward, and the third and final vote will take place at the council meeting.
The Nations Neighborhood Plan would implement an urban design overlay, which would allow for increased housing density, aiming to address affordable housing issues in Nashville.
Metro Councilmember Rollin Horton, who represents the area, said it would also deliver on the neighborhood's goals: more walkability, more support for neighborhood businesses, and increased planting requirements.
The plan, however, has received some pushback.
Residents have spoken out against the increased volume of traffic and housing, saying the Nations does not have the room for that.
Others say it's a great idea.
Both opinions have been expressed at previous Metro meetings ahead of tonight's vote.
"The Nations is a beautiful tapestry of residential, commercial and industrial neighborhoods. This plan addresses key issues faced by the outdated infrastructure and zoning standards that are holding these neighborhoods back," one resident said at a previous meeting.
"When this notice came in the mail, it was horrifying. I would like to clarify for council that what we are talking about here is a blanket upzoning to multifamily by right of the entire Nations neighborhood. The magnitude of this cannot be understated," another resident said.
The last chance for residents to speak about the plan is tonight at the Metro Council meeting. The meeting begins at 6:30 in the historic Metro Courthouse downtown.
