Description
FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Franklin is celebrating a grand reopening of an historic city landmark.
The Harlinsdale Farm barn underwent extensive upgrades, and now it's officially back open to the public.
At a special grand reopening event, city staff met with state historic preservation officials and representatives with the Friends of Franklin Parks to celebrate the next step in the barn's life and cut the ribbon on the like-new barn.
The barn has decades of history in Franklin.
In 2004, the Harlin family made the decision to sell the farm. But rather than sell the land for development, the Harlins sold the farm to the City of Franklin at a reduced cost under one condition: the property would be converted into a public park that could be enjoyed for decades to come.
Some of the changes made during the extensive renovations include:
- A new roof and updated exterior siding
- A paved road around the barn with ADA parking
- Landscaping improvements
- Warming kitchen, new flooring, and improved drainage
- Additional bathrooms and overhead heaters
- Fans for improved air circulation
- Structural updates to meet code, enabling the barn to host events
Today, the buildings and grounds are maintained by the City of Franklin with the support of Friends of Franklin Parks. Visitors can enjoy the nearby Harpeth River, walking trails, the dog park, and live music.
Additionally, the Park at Harlinsdale Farm still hosts horses at regular polo matches and other equine events, according to the city.
