NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Investigators with the Nashville Fire Department classified the weekend fire that tore through a Bellevue apartment complex, leaving a dozen families homeless, as “undetermined.”

The fire broke out Saturday at Slate Apartment Homes. Nashville firefighters said they cannot confirm the cause due to a lack of evidence. While the cause of the fire remains undetermined, officials shared reminders to reduce the risk of fires in the home, including cleaning dryer vents regularly.

“Yes, it builds up very quickly, especially with pets,” said Yesiel Sanchez, who works for the company ‘Dryer Vent Wizard’. He specializes in cleaning vents.

Fire departments across Middle Tennessee say they typically respond to at least one dryer-vent-related fire every year.

“It doesn’t take much to ignite, and when it burns, it’s going to burn fast,” said Hendersonville Fire Chief Scotty Bush.

Gallatin Assistant Fire Chief Scott Woodward agrees. He added that prevention comes down to routine maintenance. “It does happen, but you need to add that to your monthly home maintenance,” he said. “Make sure your dryer vents are free and clear of any dust.”

Experts recommend cleaning out dryer vents at least once a year, or more often if you have any household pets.

Fire officials also suggest updating older vent materials to modern, fire-retardant options that are less prone to lint buildup.

A key warning sign that vents may need cleaning is when clothes remain damp after a drying cycle.
