MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — The City of Murfreesboro is urging people to say no to panhandling by now offering a new way to give to those in need.
City officials are placing signs around the downtown square with a QR code for residents to send money directly to local charities.
It's a news initiative by the City of Murfreesboro called "There's a Better Way To Give."
When you scan the QR code, it takes you to a list of city approved charities like Volunteer Behavioral Health.
You can send your money that way instead of handing over cash to panhandlers.
"It's going to allow people to contribute to what they believe is a good cause," Senior VP of Operations with Volunteer Behavioral Health Nathan Miller said.
City officials said soliciting from vehicles is illegal because it's unsafe and causes traffic.
Miller said Volunteer Behavioral Health is thankful for its partnership with the city.
A QR code included on the signs will direct residents to local charities that provide sustainable assistance.
