Description

CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A convicted felon led deputies in Cheatham County on a chase that reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour before crashing into a big rig on Interstate 24.

The Cheatham County Sheriff's Office said the incident unfolded on July 28 after Deputy Darius James observed Jimmy Netherton Jr. traveling in a stolen Nissan.

According to an arrest document, the Nissan was reported stolen out of the Metro area on July 7.

Deputy James reportedly followed the vehicle, which then got onto I-24 and quickly accelerated to speeds approaching 122 miles per hour.

Investigators said Netherton was driving, and 27-year-old Alexis Reynolds was in the passenger seat.

Dashcam footage obtained by News 2 shows the moment the Nissan fishtails and hits the wheels of a big rig while traveling at speeds near 100 miles per hour.

As seen on video, a deputy calls over the radio for help, indicating that there had been a major collision.

"It's a surreal moment, you would never think you would see that in real life and when you do, it's all in slow motion when it happens right in front of you," said CCSO Deputy James.

Within moments of the crash, both Netherton and Reynolds get out of the smashed vehicle, jump the guard rail and run.

Video shows Netherton scale the grassy hill and disappear into the wood line. Meanwhile, Reynolds is seen stumbling before being taken into custody.

While in the back of the patrol car, the 27-year-old allegedly seemed hopeful that she would be rescued by Netherton stating, "Come on baby, get to me!"

According to the arrest affidavit, deputies later found crystal meth, THC and two guns in the stolen vehicle.

"Were they stolen weapons?" asked News 2's Andy Cordan.

"No sir, they were not stolen weapons, they were believed to be used in stolen vehicles and armed robberies, stuff like that," replied James.

The next morning, deputies reportedly received a tip regarding Netherton's whereabouts and executed a search warrant at the home.

As seen on video, officers moved to the door, kicked it and found the wanted man under the covers on a couch in the living room.

Deputies wrestled Netherton to ground and placed him in handcuffs. On the way to the squad car, James could be heard speaking to the wanted man.

"You ran from me twice, you ran from me last night as well," said James. "I just hope we get justice. He [Netherton] has no care in the world for anybody but himself."

The couple was booked into jail and charged with multiple felonies, including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of firearms during the commission of a felony, evading arrest, reckless endangerment, possession of drugs and violation of probation.

In fact, this is not the first time the couple has been involved in a chase with law enforcement and featured on News 2.

On Oct. 11, 2023, deputies responded to a domestic violence call where a man allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun.

Initially, Netherton got away, but Reynolds was caught. When asked why she ran, she reportedly told authorities that she wasn't running with Netherton, but she was running after him.

Days later, law enforcement found Netherton hiding under a pile of laundry in a home.
