SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Town of Smyrna is honoring its veterans with new veteran parking spaces.
Smyrna Town Manager David Santucci said he attended the town's Veterans Day ceremony last year and had a conversation with a resident. They told Santucci how much they appreciated the signs in public and private parking lots, and he realized Smyrna needed to install them.
Santucci said Smyrna has a strong military background with the Sewart Air Force Base from 1941 to 1971. Now, the town has a continued presence with the Army National Guard and an increasing presence with the Air National Guard, moving from BNA airport to Smyrna, along with the many veterans who live in the community.
“It just seemed like a very simple but meaningful thing to do and just wanted to get this in place so we can show our support for all of our veterans,” Santucci said.
The veterans parking spaces are spread out across Smyrna’s landmarks and major parks. They’re in prominent locations closer to walkways that are more ADA accessible. Smyrna’s event center, Lee Victory Park, Smyrna Town Hall and Smyrna’s Justice Center are some of the few places you can find the spaces.
“I want them to see that we’ve dedicated something to those who have served,” Santucci said. “I think whether you're a veteran or not, and you see those signs, it gives you a sense of pride and an understanding that the town is supportive of our veterans and our community, and it’s a very small token of appreciation for the sacrifices they have made.”
Santucci hopes the new spaces inspire residents to consider doing something to honor the veteran community.
