Highland Fire Truck Overturns Responding to Portland Commercial Fire, One Injured

PORTLAND, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A Highland Volunteer Firefighter was injured Wednesday afternoon in a rollover crash while responding to a commercial structure fire in Portland, officials said.

According to the Highland Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD), crews were dispatched just after 4 p.m. to assist the Portland Fire Department with a commercial fire on Highway 31 West. HVFD Tanker 101 and Engine 103, the City of Mitchellville’s engine, responded to assist.

En route to the fire, Engine-103 left the road and overturned on Highway 259 near Highway 31 West just before 4:30 p.m. LOCATION OF CRASH After leaving the roadway, the fire engine flipped onto its side, slid across a grass area, and into the parking lot of The Edge of HWY 259 Townhomes. According to HVFD, one firefighter was in the vehicle. The firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to Portland Medical Center for evaluation. “Engine 103 and a retaining wall sustained severe damage.”

According to officials with the Portland Fire Department, the commercial fire was quickly brought under control through the efforts of firefighters and the company’s fire suppression systems. Initially, Robertson County resources were called in to assist, but they were canceled en route..

No other injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were damaged, officials said. The Portland Police Department handled is leading the investigation.

At approximately 16:03 on 10/22/2025, Highland Volunteer Fire Department resources were dispatched to assist the City of Portland Fire Department for a commercial structure fire on Highway 31 W. Tanker 101 and Engine 103 (City of Mitchellville Engine) responded to the scene to assist. While responding, at approximately 16:28 Engine 103 was involved in a single vehicle accident on Highway 259 near Highway 31W. There was one occupant, the driver/operator, driving Engine 103 to the scene. Our firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to Portland Medical Center for evaluation. Engine 103 and a retaining wall sustained severe damage. There were no other injuries or damage to other vehicles. Besides fighting fires, responding to emergencies are the most dangerous part of our jobs.

We are incredibly thankful that there were no serious injuries. Portland Police Department conducted the investigation.

We would like to thank Portland Police Department and Sumner County EMS for their timely response and for taking care of our member that was injured. We would also like to thank all of the neighboring agencies, fire departments, Sumner EMA, Robertson EMA, Robertson EMS, City of Mitchellville Officials, City of Portland Officials, Local Sumner County officials, and many members of the public who expressed their concerns and offered assistance and prayers.
