SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — In a unanimous decision at Tuesday night's meeting, Spring Hill's Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to amend heir neighborhood traffic calming program by prioritizing traffic education and enforcement across the city.
"I’d like to not have to have a traffic calming program at all because I'd like people to drive a safe, reasonable speed, especially in neighborhoods around families and children, and put their phones down, but unfortunately, drivers choose to make other decisions,” Spring Hill Mayor Matt Fitterer told News 2.
For several years, Spring Hill's neighborhood traffic calming program led with ways to engineer traffic calming by using speed bumps or narrowing lanes, but Fitterer said the city will instead use education and enforcement at the front end of the process to encourage residents to follow the rules of the road.
"I think the unspoken reality is the people who drive unsafely in neighborhoods are oftentimes residents of those neighborhoods," Fitterer added. "They're driving in their own neighborhood most ... People need to slow down [and] put their phones down, and that’s true across Middle Tennessee — regardless of population."
The City of Murfreesboro's traffic calming program has shown success. Last month, the city reported a decrease in speeding drivers. Earlier this week, the Nashville Department of Transportation also identified 25 streets in South Nashville and Antioch to implement traffic calming measures which will include both engineering and enforcement.
News 2 asked Fitterer if there are any specific problem areas that will see heightened traffic enforcement.
“There's a pretty big list," Fitterer responded. "Obviously, everybody experiences their neighborhood the most, so depending on who you talk to, the most problematic neighborhood happens to be the [one for] person you're talking to.”
