NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — If you are choosing not to drink this Fourth of July, there is a safe space for those who are sober at Nashville's fireworks spectacular.
In downtown Nashville, tents are set up for people who are in recovery or just don't want to consume alcohol during the Let Freedom Sing! event.
Hosted by Cumberland Heights Recovery Center, the sober space is at the corner of Gay and Church streets.
There are several tents to sit under so you can stay cool, and they're also providing mocktails for people to enjoy.
The organizer, Casey Hyatt, said spaces like these have become an increasing need in Nashville, especially on big holidays.
Last year, 150 were signed up for the sober space; this year Hyatt said over 900 people are registered.
"Drinking is so normative on certain days of the year, and Fourth of July seems to be one of those that's almost specifically for drinking and even drinking all day. We're encouraging less stigma, more independence, more freedom, and an opportunity to get involved with your own life no matter what's going on," Hyatt said.
You don't have to register to go to the sober space.
The tent will stay open until after the fireworks show.
