ROBERTSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) ā Robertson County Emergency Medical Services personnel installed new tornado shelters this week.
On Tuesday, July 1, above-ground shelters were installed in the Coopertown and Cedar Hill EMS stations. They offer protection from all types of severe weather, including EF-5 tornadoes.
According to Brent Dyer ā director of Robertson County EMS ā the shelters cost about $6,100 each. He said the price tag fit into their budget, so they didn't have to ask for additional funds. Dyer said the investment will go a long way to protect both his first responders and his community.
Dyer added that while the FEMA-approved shelters are for his first responders, in case of an emergency, there's room for up to six people.
"By no means does it mean that our employees and personnel are any more important than anybody else in our community, but if I don't keep them safe, they can't go help others, so that's why I felt it was necessary," Dyer told News 2.
Dyer said officials had thought about getting a below-ground shelter, but they would have had to pull one of the ambulances out of the garage to open it. With tornadoes, that delay could be the difference between life and death.
