RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Thousands in Rutherford County are still trying to determine if they will receive a tax refund or a tax bill after the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury told county commissioners that many property assessments were "riddled with errors."

Because of the report from the Tennessee Comptroller's Office, Smyrna council members held a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss what impacts this could mean for the town.

“Obviously, I think the biggest thing for us — for me — that I’m concerned about, even above the fiscal impacts, is the public trust,” Town Manager of Smyrna, David Santucci told council members at the meeting.

The report, which looked at 8,683 properties in the county, estimated that one in four properties were assessed incorrectly by the Rutherford County Property Assessor’s Office.

"I think there're still a lot of unanswered questions that are going to have to be answered, and that’s just going to take time to figure those out,” Smyrna Mayor Mary Esther Reed told council members during the meeting.

At the meeting, Smyrna town leaders explained that property tax is a key source of revenue for the town. As of right now, they don't know how many people were overtaxed or undertaxed or how it could affect the city's budget.

Smyrna leaders said they would post information on the town's webpage explaining the situation and providing resources so residents could calculate their own property taxes to make sure they're paying the right amount.

Before the special meeting in Smyrna, News 2 also met with La Vergne Mayor Jason Cole about the state report.

"It's a pretty shocking report. There's concern," Cole explained. "There's definitely concern and we're interested in seeing where the county commission is going to go from here with actions and next steps to rectify this looming problem ... Depending on the scale, it could impact our budget. It just depends on what that looks like."
