SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — It's been seven months since a mother and her daughter were hit by a car at a crosswalk in Spring Hill.
Now the city has made a change to the crosswalk they hope will protect more pedestrians.
That pedestrian crash seven months ago stirred the community, with many neighbors voicing the need for a change; now, the city has heard their concerns.
The crosswalk sits between Longview Elementary School and the Longview Recreation Center.
People living in the area said there was no indication to drivers that a crosswalk was ahead other than one easily-missed sign if drivers were not paying attention.
However, just this week, Spring Hill Public Works crews finished installing new flashing beacons at the crosswalk.
When pedestrians press the button to cross, the sign will flash rapidly, demanding the driver's attention.
"Spring Hill desires all of our roadways to be safe, but I think there's some extra sensitivity when it comes to in and around elementary schools. I think everyone believes that children deserve to go to and from school safely," Spring Hill Mayor Matt Fitterer said.
The changes come just in time for the start of school: Williamson County Schools returns to the classroom in two-and-a-half weeks, on Aug. 4.
