NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The hottest part of Meteorological summer is here and the temperatures will be well above average. Heat alerts will be likely over the coming days despite daily chances for thunderstorms.

On Wednesday, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for Benton, Carroll, Decatur, and Henry counties (west of the TN River). Feels like temperatures in this region will be as high as 108° Wednesday afternoon.

While most areas on Wednesday are not under a heat alert, it will feel like 100° - 105° briefly on Wednesday afternoon. By Thursday, feels like temperatures by midday are projected to near 100°, and up to 106° in the afternoon. This will likely lead to a Heat Advisory in more areas on Thursday (perhaps succeeding days also).

Storm risk

There will be daily rain and storm chances in our forecast along with the heat. Due to the ample moisture and humid conditions, storms will bring heavy rain at times and some gusty winds.

On Wednesday, sporadic scattered showers and storms are expected this afternoon and evening. However on Thursday, the storm chances increase with a potential of a few severe storms. There is a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for all of Southern Kentucky on Thursday afternoon and evening for wind gusts that could lead to damage.

A storm complex will develop in the Ohio River vicinity, and help increase the strong to severe storm risk in Southern Kentucky. This could shift southward into Middle Tennessee by Thursday afternoon and evening.

Rain chances will persist through the weekend. As the heat high intensifies, the rain chances will dwindle in coverage, allowing for hotter temperatures.

The takeaway: it will be hot! As of Wednesday, we've hit 90° or higher in Nashville for 14 consecutive days, and likely to make it at least another 7-10 days. There will be rain chances, but not everyone will see rain in the coming days. So with heat being the dominating concern, be sure to watch for the signs of heat-related illnesses.
