WAVERLY, Tenn. (WKRN) — On Saturday, a candlelight vigil was held to honor the 20 lives lost during devastating flooding in 2021.
In August 2021, 20 people lost their lives to flooding in Humphreys County — 19 in Waverly and one in Hurricane Mills. Between nine and 17 inches of rain fell in Middle Tennessee within 24 hours that morning, which caught many residents off-guard. It was the deadliest flood event in Middle Tennessee and the second-deadliest in state history.
Wayne Spears, Mark Kee, Robert Scott Kilburn, Robin Shawl, Ryan Rigney, Rileigh Rigney, Regenia Brake, Nathanal Whitsett, Mary Luten, Lucy Connor, Linda Almond, Lilly Bryant, Leslie Kersten, Kellen Burrow Vaughn, Joshua Hendrix, Joseph Reeves, James Michael Betty, Hallie Lee Gerber, Donna Bradley and Amber Newman were honored at the memorial and candlelight vigil at Cross of Church Christ Saturday evening.
Sen. Kerry Roberts (R-Springfield) coordinated a memorial bike ride to the event. He traveled from the Robertson County Courthouse to the Humphreys County Courthouse. Every year, Roberts commits to the memorial ride, according to the Humphreys County Government.
Recovery and rebuilding efforts are still underway in the community.
