Description

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Meteorological summer ended on Aug. 31, and in Nashville, it was the seventh hottest summer on record. The average temperature finished more than 2° warmer than normal.

This summer was hot, humid and wet, but it didn't feature many extremes. Nashville only reached the triple digits once, and we didn't break many heat records.

We had consistent rain that helped keep the humidity elevated for most of the summer. When the humidity is high, it is difficult to see temperature extremes. The high humidity also causes the temperature at night to stay warm. This caused our nighttime lows to be above average for the majority of the summer.

Even though the mercury never hit extreme highs, the high humidity made it feel extreme for us. It was common for most of this summer to have the feels like temperature over 100° during the afternoon.

The high humidity isn't the only cause for the hot summer. The warming climate is another factor that has made our summers so hot.

This is evident when looking at the list of Nashville's top 10 hottest summers. Six of the 10 have occurred in the last 20 years. Remember, the temperature data in Nashville goes back over 150 years.

The orange bars indicate summers in the last 20 years.

This data shows that Nashville's summertime temperatures are warming with 60% of Nashville's 10 hottest summers having occurred in the most recent 13% of the data.

Out of the last 10 summers, only two have featured cooler-than-normal temperatures.

Summer is Nashville's fastest-warming season. In the last 150 years, there has been little to no warming during the fall and winter. Spring is warming, but at a slower pace than summer.

If this trend continues, be ready for even hotter summers in the coming years!
