NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One Nashville pastor with a passion for helping others has started making a difference in a big way with a simple idea: a bench.
Robin Owen told News 2 that she noticed many benches being taken away across Nashville. She's fighting the problem by making her own benches, and she has inspired other members in the community to do the same.
Owen said that a lot of bus stops and busy roads used to have benches, but not anymore. Not only are there fewer benches, but many of the benches still standing have a rail in the middle, which makes it hard for people to lie down on them.
She started making her own and putting them in places that she thought needed them. Owen builds the benches in a simple way — all it takes is a board and a handful of screws. That was purposeful, she said, as it makes it easy for other people to make.
That's exactly what's happened.
"Honestly, that's been the neatest thing to me is that it's something that's resonated with people," Owen said. "I think that we started it as a very simple thing. Honestly, any of the attention that it has garnered has been beyond my wildest imagination, but I think something about the simplicity of it and the concrete aspect of the simple action has really resonated with a lot of people."
To teach more people how to build these benches, Owen is hosting a bench-building party on September 20 at 9 a.m. at Memorial Lutheran Church in East Nashville.
