MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — Murfreesboro police said they're working to crack down on dangerous driving after Rutherford County saw more than 600 crashes in June.

During the same month, Murfreesboro saw more than 300 crashes — down roughly 100 crashes compared to June 2024. Still, it’s a number that lieutenant Zachary Ferrell with the Murfreesboro Police Department wants to see brought down.

“Throughout the summer, it's a dangerous time to be out on the roadway in general, so we're trying to crack down on crashes that are happening at our intersections,” Ferrell said. “So what we're doing is placing officers focused on data-driven analysis. We're putting officers during the times where we're having crashes at intersections, and we're just trying to crack down on violators.”

During the summer initiative, police said they'll pay extra attention to busy intersections including Old Fort Parkway and North Thompson Lane as well as Rutherford and Broad Street.

“The goal is always to just proactively address violations. But overall, the goal would be ultimately — we would like that number to be zero, where the officers could come back and say, 'Hey, we don't have any violations here, and everybody's following traffic law,'" Ferrell added. "But so far, that hasn't been the case."

Officers will monitor intersections for the remainder of the summer, with a new infraction focus each week, such as drivers running red lights. Police have asked drivers to put down their phones, avoid speeding and watch out for motorcycles — especially when making left-hand turns.

They asked drivers to watch out for motorcycles, especially when making left-hand turns. So far this year, Rutherford County has seen 58 motorcycle crashes.

“When we start thinking about other people and not just ourselves, typically we'll become better drivers," Ferrell said. "We'll be a little more responsible and our driving behaviors will be safer.”

Extra patrols for the Fourth of July holiday will begin Wednesday.
