LONDON, Ky. (WKRN) — More than 100 volunteers from Light in the Storm Disaster Relief in White House, Tennessee, traveled to London, Kentucky, to help with recovery efforts after severe weather hit the area.

"From all that the eye can see is full destruction, so we're going to do the best we can to get these folks help until the work job is finished," Johnny Rodman, founder of Light in the Storm Disaster Relief, told News 2.

Rodman said this is the 12th disaster his group has responded to in less than three years.

"There are dozens and dozens of homes that are just completely leveled, and dozens more that are almost completely destroyed," he added.

According to Rodman, volunteers are focusing on gathering valuables and important paperwork from the debris for people who lost their homes. Since arriving on Saturday, May 17, he said the group found three wedding rings while sifting through the wreckage.

"People are so much in tears. People are humbled by us finding the smallest things because once your entire home is gone, every little thing is precious to you, and especially...like a wedding ring or a keepsake is worth its weight in gold -- more than anything else -- and it's such a huge blessing to give them that little glimmer of hope that there's another tomorrow, that nothing's completely lost," Rodman explained.

According to Gov. Andy Beshear, at least 19 people died after the storms in Kentucky, including 17 in Laurel County, which is where London is located; one in Pulaski County; and one in Russell County.

Rodman said the neighborhoods affected by the storm in London are some of the worst destruction he’s seen out of a storm all year. He compared it to the aftermath in Mayfield when an EF-4 tornado ripped through the region.

If you’d like to help, Rodman said Light in the Storm Disaster Relief is accepting more volunteers and donations. You can visit LightInTheStorm.org or call 615-517-8369.
