NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An ordinance before the Metro Council could lead to the creation of a new business district that would unite Nashville's downtown core with The Gulch.
The ordinance would create a "Downtown Central Business Improvement District" that would expand the downtown business district and incorporate The Gulch's business district. Jacob Kupin, the Metro Councilmember for District 19 and one of the bill's sponsors, said business districts like this help pay for safety, programming, beautification and cleanliness.
The inspiration came, Kupin added, because several businesses had asked to be a part of the district.
"We've heard from residents and property owners who do want this, so we've looked at how to expand the boundary," Kupin said. "We're also working on creating one in Midtown because we've heard from residents and business owners there as well that they have seen what happens in downtown and they want that as well."
Kupin said supporting entities like the downtown district helps fund city services and frees up resources for other neighborhoods.
The bill, which also includes appointing a corporation to act as an advisory board within the district, is up for its second reading at Tuesday's Metro Council meeting and it will be open for public comment at the July 15 meeting.
