NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Nashville business owners say sky high property taxes have them struggling to keep the doors open.

Some said they owe tens of thousands more dollars than they did last year.

Nashville is known for good times and live music, but the bright lights of Broadway could soon dim, according to Metro Council member Jacob Kupin.

"As the bills are coming out, there is a lot of concern that the downtown businesses may have to close their doors because the bills have gotten so high," Kupin said.

Businesses worry they'll have to shut down because of hiked property taxes.

Kupin claims the reason for this is that many of the buildings were over appraised.

"I've spoken to one business who says the tax bill is double their lease," he said.

He wants other city leaders to take another look at the appraisal process before many of the businesses could shut down.

"We've got a great downtown," he said. "You can't raise the price of beer or pizza much more."

He said this will likely affect residential properties, too.

Property taxes are due in February.

There is an appeal process, but that reimbursement could take until next fall.
