Description
MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Maury County law enforcement had to arrest one of their own following an incident in Columbia earlier this week.
According to Sheriff Bucky Rowland, Randy Marrisett was a Maury County deputy for 16 years and had recently been promoted to sergeant.
On Tuesday, April 29, that all came to a screeching halt when the 39-year-old was pulled over by the Columbia Police Department.
Witnesses said the off-duty sergeant was driving a Ford F-150 that was pulling a trailer loaded with lawn equipment.
According to Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder, police stopped the vehicle because they believed the driver could be intoxicated.
Per the arrest documents, Marrisett not only "had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person and slurred speech," but he also appeared lethargic when speaking to law enforcement.
The affidavit goes on to say that Marrisett "was travelling at high rate of speed in residential neighborhoods. He also was passing vehicles on double yellow lines. He displayed several driving behaviors that disregarded public safety."
According to the mayor, after a brief interaction with officers, the 39-year-old sped away from the scene. Police chased after him, but they terminated the pursuit around Campbellsville Pike.
News 2 has attempted multiple times to get more details from Columbia police, but those attempts were not successful.
During the chase, many people turned to social media to discuss the situation.
According to one person, the driver almost struck a light pole and a tree on 7th Street and hit two mowers. Another person wrote that they were watering their garden when they "saw him fly by."
Based on official records, Marrisett was arrested on Wednesday, April 30 and booked into the Maury County Jail for driving under the influence, reckless driving and felony evading.
The sheriff did not want to speak on camera, but he did tell News 2 that Marrisett was a great deputy and an even better dad who made an idiotic decision that cost him a lot. Rowland confirmed that the veteran law enforcement officer was terminated from his position.
District Attorney Brent Cooper would not comment except to say that this matter will be handled just like any other case.
