NOLENSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A man who was released from jail in North Carolina was picked up again, hundreds of miles away, following a traffic stop in Middle Tennessee.
The Nolensville Police Department caught an SUV speeding along Nolensville Road during the early morning hours of Aug. 18. Officers pulled over the driver -- later identified as 40-year-old Nicholas James Clement -- and discovered his license was suspended.
Authorities said the man's story about to what he was doing didn't add up. At one point, Clement reportedly claimed to be working for a food delivery service.
When officers looked in the backseat, they saw two large glass jars of a green leafy substance, later confirmed to be marijuana.
"You have something in the back that looks like marijuana," an officer commented, causing Clement to look behind him, "in a mason jar."
The driver said something to the officer, but it was unintelligible in the body camera footage.
"I mean, I can see it," the officer continued. "It's like right there."
The officer informed Clement that because she could see what looked like marijuana, she had probable cause to search the vehicle.
As soon as Clement got out of the car, officers placed him in custody.
A search of the vehicle yielded drugs, including the marijuana in the mason jars, as well as a powdery substance that Clement reportedly said was ecstasy. Officers also found numerous pills, pipes, and vials of synthetic urine.
"This is something we've heard of for a long time, and it's not uncommon for a drug user to carry synthetic urine so that they can bypass drug tests," NPD Sgt. Christina Sabol explained.
News 2 has looked into into Clement's record. According to court documents, the Asheville Police Department in North Carolina arrested Clement in February on multiple driving and drug charges, including possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and deliver within 1,000 feet of a park.
North Carolina authorities confirmed Clement was in Nolensville after bonding out of jail in the Tar Heel State on those drug charges.
There was also a female passenger in the car during the Nolensville traffic stop. Officials said she was arrested for public intoxication.
"There are a lot of inconsistencies in their story. There were statements that they were here DoorDashing, they were here -- the driver was here -- picking up a girlfriend and then driving all the way back to North Carolina," Sabol told News 2. "...We definitely suspected that there was distribution going on based on the baggies; the amount of drugs in the vehicle; and, of course, the inconsistent statements. Just the totality of the circumstances indicated that there was some bad play at hand."
Clement is being held in the Williamson County Jail, charged with driving on a suspended license, speeding, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a Schedule I controlled substance with intent to sell, and possession of Schedule VI controlled substance with intent to sell.
