NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A man was arrested for attempted homicide after his father was severely beaten inside their Joelton home Wednesday afternoon.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said officers responded to a domestic-related aggravated assault in the 5600 block of Clarksville Pike on Wednesday, Aug. 6. When authorities neared the address, the 64-year-old victim -- who reportedly had blood on his face, neck and arms -- flagged them down.
According to an affidavit, first responders determined the victim had two lacerations on the top of his head, as well as multiple open wounds on his arms. Law enforcement said the victim was shaking and crying while being treated.
Police initially told News 2 the victim said he was arguing with his son when the son grabbed a frying pan and hit the victim in the head with it. However, per the court document, the victim claimed he didn't know what he was struck by, only that his son attacked him.
Based on the affidavit, the victim said the suspect -- identified as David L. Beranek Jr. -- had started drinking alcohol Wednesday morning and his violent behavior increased throughout the day. In addition, the son allegedly fired a handgun on the property while drinking, which scared the victim.
According to the court document, "the victim stated another verbal altercation led to a physical altercation which led to the significant injuries on the victim."
During the fight, the victim reported his son discovered he had a pistol holstered on his hip. The suspect allegedly disarmed his father, who had to "fight for his life."
While the two wrestled for the gun, the magazine fell from the weapon, per the affidavit. Then, after getting the gun away from his son, the father ran off.
Based on the court document, when authorities searched for the suspect, they discovered a bloody crime scene at the house. Police also found the magazine that fell from the victim's weapon on the stairwell, which accounted for the physical altercation.
MNPD said North Precinct officers, with some help from SWAT, set up a perimeter around the home late Wednesday afternoon in order to arrest Beranek on the outstanding warrant.
Traffic was temporarily diverted on a small section of Clarksville Pike between Cantarutti Road and Bianco Road while law enforcement worked to determine whether the son was still in the home. However, a "subsequent thorough search of the home and an outbuilding revealed that Beranek was not on the property," authorities said.
When North Precinct officers checked the home shortly before 10:30 p.m., MNPD said they noticed Beranek had returned, so they took him into custody without incident.
According to law enforcement, the 28-year-old son is being held in the Downtown Detention Center on a $175,000 bond for domestic-related attempted criminal homicide.
As of Thursday, Aug. 7, officials said the father has been released from TriStar Skyline Medical Center.
No additional details have been released about this incident.
