WAYNE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — One inmate is dead and two others are injured following a fight that took place Wednesday evening at a prison in Wayne County, officials said.
According to a CoreCivic spokesperson, staff at the South Central Correctional Facility responded to a fight involving several inmates in a housing unit just after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Officials said the unit was immediately secured and medical staff provided treatment to three inmates until EMS crews arrived.
Emergency personnel reportedly determined that two of the inmates needed to be flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, a third inmate was taken to a hospital by EMS crews.
The inmate who was taken to the hospital by EMS crews was pronounced dead by hospital staff at approximately 7 p.m., officials said.
A CoreCivic spokesperson told News 2 that another one of the injured inmates was treated for his injuries and has since been returned to the facility. Meanwhile, the other inmate remains hospitalized in stable condition.
"Our partners at the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) were immediately notified of this incident and an investigation by TDOC's Office of Investigation and Conduct (OIC) is underway with full cooperation from SCCF staff," stated a CoreCivic spokesperson. "As a result of this incident, the facility has been placed on lockdown."
No additional details about the deadly altercation were immediately released.
