LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The La Vergne Stormwater Department began inspecting infrastructure throughout the city Monday following flash flooding over the weekend.

“It was shocking. It was wet, and I was about ankle deep in it,” La Vergne Mayor Jason Cole said about Saturday’s storms. “These are people's homes. This is where they live, and they don't want to be flooded out. We all remember 2010, and no one wants to go through that again.”

Neighbors experienced flooding along roadways and in their yards — some even experienced high waters in their own driveways.

"We had high water on Bill Stewart [Boulevard] and parts of Stones River [Road] that caused some detouring," Cole added. "We had backyards flooded out, front yards flooded out, and general inconvenience to our residents."

This week, the La Vergne Stormwater Department workers will inspect infrastructure, looking for any debris that could be preventing water from easily flowing into area creeks.

“Our stormwater department is out, and they are looking at various areas — evaluating them, determining whether brush or debris clogged up inlets or not, or whether large scale work will need to be done to improve," Cole said. "Overall, our big goal is to make sure that what happened Saturday doesn't occur again to our residents."

Cole said the city made several improvements to its storm water infrastructure in 2019 and will re-evaluate those efforts following this storm.
