MURFREESBORO, TN. (WKRN) — If you live in Murfreesboro, your chance to learn more about your local government is coming up: the city is hosting a Citizens Academy next month.
From systems of government to infrastructure and how city leaders have handled growth, the 8-week class will cover a wide range of topics. The Fall 2025 class kicks off Oct. 6, but applications for the 25 available spots are already open — and they're due by 5 p.m. Sept. 22.
During each class, a city leader or department director will discuss their job and how it impacts the community's day-to-day life.
Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland said it's important people know how the city works and the processes they go through to operate efficiently. He added that when citizens are in the know, they feel more involved in where they live.
The mayor said that as long as he's in office, he will continue to push for more engagement with the public.
"I can't speak to state politics and I can't speak on the national side, but I will always argue that what happens at the local level affects you more on the day-to-day than any other form of government," McFarland told News 2.
The city says preference may be given to applicants who are registered voters and residents of Murfreesboro. If you're interested in applying, follow this link. Notices of acceptance will be communicated to applicants by Sept. 29.
