MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — The immigration status for several students at Middle Tennessee State University has changed, according to officials.

Provost Mark Byrnes, addressing MTSU's Student Government Association, said during a Thursday meeting that four students were identified by the Department of Homeland Security as having their visas revoked. Members of the SGA had asked Byrnes about protocols for faculty if Immigrations & Customs Enforcement were to come to campus.

Byrnes said when it comes to dealing with ICE on campus, rules had been drafted by the university's legal team.

"We have had four students who were identified by Homeland Security — information flow has been a bit sketchy ... but these are international students whose visas have been revoked," Byrne said. "They are supposed to be going home and if they don't, they're in violation."

MTSU is not the only higher education institution in the Volunteer State with students whose visa status has changed. Nine students with the University of Tennesee are at risk for deportation, according to News 2's sister station WATE. In a statement, a university spokesperson said the administration as and will comply with all federal and state laws.

"Middle Tennessee State University has been made aware that changes to the immigration status of six of our international students were recently made in a federal immigration database. MTSU has and will follow all federal and state laws, some of which limit what we can share about our students. We greatly value our international student community, and, through our International Affairs office, we are reaching out to impacted students and are working to answer any questions they may have."
