LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A person is facing multiple charges after he reportedly led a police chase through La Vergne Wednesday night while two young children were in his vehicle.
According to the La Vergne Police Department, Field Training Officer Thiede was stopped at a red light at Murfreesboro Road and Fergus Road just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30 when a pickup truck in front "accelerated aggressively, weaving through traffic and narrowly missing other vehicles."
Authorities said Thiede activated the emergency lights and sirens and tried to perform a traffic stop, but the vehicle drove off, leading to a pursuit through city streets.
Officials didn't share any details about what happened during the chase, but they did say the truck eventually stopped at a home on Harrell Street, where the driver exited and initially complied, but then he resisted while being taken into custody.
However, law enforcement described a "troubling discovery" that occurred afterward: Thiede learned that a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old were inside the vehicle during the pursuit, but officers confirmed the kids were unharmed.
During the booking process at the La Vergne Police Department, Officer Brewer found a clear baggie containing a crystal-like substance inside the driver's right shoe, which he reportedly admitted was cocaine.
According to authorities, the suspect was transported to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and booked for felony evading, reckless driving, two counts of aggravated child endangerment, resisting arrest, and simple possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.
"We commend FTO Thiede and all assisting officers for their professionalism and swift action in safely resolving this dangerous situation and protecting the children involved. Reckless driving and endangering innocent lives will not be tolerated in our city," the La Vergne Police Department posted on Facebook on Sunday, May 4.
No additional details have been released about Wednesday night's incident, including the identity of the individual who was arrested.
