Human Leg Discovered in Creek Along Springfield Greenway
UPDATE: As of 4 p.m., the Greenway has been reopened.
SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Authorities have closed a portion of the Springfield Greenway after the discovery of a human leg in the creek near the Robertson County Fairgrounds, the first call coming into 911 at 12:37 PM.
The leg was discovered near the Sulphur Creek Memorial Boulevard bridge, which is across from the Pavilion at the Robertson County Fairgrounds, just feet from Springfield’s Freedom Fest Celebration last night, where hundreds of people were gathered. MAP That section of the Greenway was temporarily closed as investigators worked the scene.
Smokey Barn News has learned that the leg may have been in the creek for some time. If so, it could have originated from almost anyplace upstream. The Springfield Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency, Robertson County EMS, and the Springfield Fire Department.
How the remains will be identified:
When only a portion of a body is recovered, authorities typically begin with forensic examination, including checks for surgical implants, trauma, or distinguishing features. If no immediate leads surface, the remains are then processed for DNA extraction, which is compared against missing persons databases or submitted for familial DNA matching. This process can take weeks or even months, depending on lab backlogs and the condition of the sample.
As of now, the identity of the individual and the circumstances surrounding the discovery remain unknown.
Smokey Barn News will continue to follow this developing story.
