NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Homicides are up in South Nashville, and the latest data from Metro police shows a 45% increase compared to this time last year.
City leaders hope the new Southeast police precinct, set to open in a matter of months, will help decrease crime in the area.
The sound of gunshots is all too common in South Nashville, according to residents.
So far in 2025, there have been 16 compared to the 11 by this time last year.
"We want people to walk down the sidewalk at night with their families and not worry," District 28 Metro Council member David Benton said.
The Southeast Metro police precinct is set to open in the fall, according to Benton.
It'll cut down on response times and crime numbers as well, officials hope.
The facility will be off Murfreesboro Pike and Edge O Lake Drive.
Benton said 80 police officers will work out of this precinct, covering 72 square miles.
The new precinct will also house the MNPD's traffic unit.
