GRUNDY COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A hiker died after he was bit by a snake in the Savage Gulf State Park in Grundy County last week.

First responders were called to the Savage Gulf trailhead off 55th Avenue in Gruetli-Laager Friday around 12:30 p.m.

According to Grundy County Emergency Management, the hiker was located a half-mile down the trail. Medics began CPR, both manually and with a compression machine, before he was taken to an area hospital. He later died from his injury at the hospital.

A volunteer firefighter went to the bite victim's home and took their spouse to be with him.

Grundy County Emergency Management recommends to have some kind of fire aide supplies while enjoying outdoor recreational activities and be mindful of wildlife and the dangers that some wildlife may pose.

Savage Gulf is maintained and operated by Tennessee State Parks and sits within the South Cumberland State Park. It spans nearly 16,000 acres in Grundy and Sequatchie counties. Savage Gulf boasts attractions ranging from waterfalls to wildflowers along with sandstone cliffs and picturesque gorges. Visitors can hike, swim, rock climb and camp within the park.
