NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Do you have pumpkins you want to get rid of after Halloween? If you drop them off at one Nashville business, they'll go somewhere they'll be enjoyed much more than in the trash.
Pigs!
Marla Torres, a Pumpkin Ambassador for the Flying Pigs Sanctuary, said pigs love pumpkin—it's one of their favorite snacks and can be part of a healthy fall treat after Halloween.
The Flying Pigs Sanctuary is in Grandview, two hours east of Nashville. It's a place for animals that have experienced abuse or neglect can heal.
The sanctuary is collecting pumpkins right here in Nashville in front of Hoop House on Wedgewood Avenue.
According to the sanctuary, the program has been going on for years. They told News 2 the pumpkins they get in November will feed their pigs all winter long, and even into the spring.
Last year they were able to collect 600 pumpkins. This year, they hope to collect 700 pumpkins.
"We've collected probably thousands at this point each year to be able to help, but she has so many pigs. IT's a beautiful opportunity to give back," Torres told News 2. "The pigs are happy; they love them. They get so excited."
Torres said they're looking for pumpkins that have not been carved or painted and are not rotting.
Hoop House is located at 1218 Wedgewood Avenue.
