Fire at Homeless Camp Near Dean Oil Quickly Contained by Springfield Fire

SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A fire near Dean Oil in Springfield prompted a large emergency response late Sunday night. At first glance, the fire and billowing smoke appeared to be emanating directly from Dean Oil’s facility, raising concern due to its proximity to several fuel tankers. The facility is located off East 11th Ave at Hill St.  MAP

However, as crews arrived, it became clear that the fire originated from a small makeshift shelter located just across the railroad tracks behind the facility. The structure was fully involved crews arrived,  the first call coming into 911 at 10:53 p.m. The small encampment, constructed of wood and other materials, was located just feet from tankers at Dean Oil, separated only by a fence and the tracks.

Fortunately, Springfield firefighters had the fire under control and extinguished it in just a matter of minutes, preventing it from spreading to the nearby wood line and potentially to other structures on the opposite side of the tracks.

Springfield firefighters quickly moved in, stretching hoses across the tracks to reach the flames, accessing the fire from the Dean Oil facility. Springfield Police, Robertson County EMS, and the Springfield Fire Department all responded to the scene. Emergency crews acted quickly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading toward the tankers. Officials told Smokey Barn News that the fire was sparked by a candle.
