NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Elon Musk along with Tennessee officials announced plans for an underground tunnel intended to connect the Nashville International Airport (BNA) with downtown Nashville Monday.
Musk was joined by officials with the Tennessee Economic Development & Community Development for the announcement at the airport at 4 p.m.
According to Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, the tunnel is called "Music City Loop."
Officials said the tunnel will not be a cost for taxpayers as it is a private project.
Musk’s The Boring Company project aims to connect downtown Nashville to the airport along Murfreesboro Pike, which is a state route. The tunnel is expected to be between five and 10 miles long and only available to Tesla vehicles, which will be used to usher tourists to and from downtown.
Musk's drilling company previously built a 1.7-mile loop underneath the Las Vegas Convention Center. The current loop system is designed for 4,400 passengers per hour with three large stations. Construction on a larger-scale loop to encompass Vegas with 68 miles of tunnel and 104 stations is underway.
An estimated 20 million travelers pass through BNA every year.
