SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) -- The Smith County Rescue Squad saved a dog that was stranded on a small island Saturday morning.
Officials said the Carthage Police Department notified the rescue squad shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 about a stranded dog at the river.
Personnel launched a boat from the Upper Ferry boat ramp and discovered the animal on "a small island that was created when the water goes down just inside a creek entrance," according to the rescue squad.
First responders said they had to extend a ladder across a muddy area to reach him, adding that the dog apparently couldn't establish enough footing in the mud to get out on his own. However, the rescue squad brought him to safety and turned him over to police for care.
"We are not sure if a cat may have played a role in his predicament or not, he would not comment when asked," the rescue squad wrote on Facebook. "Either way he is safe & out of the mud. Thanks to those volunteers that assisted our little 4 legged friend."
No additional details have been released about this incident.
