NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A string of recent crashes has neighbors asking the city to step in and fix a dangerous intersection in East Nashville.
The intersection of S 5th and Main streets is a troublesome area for drivers, walkers, and bikers.
Just in the past two weeks, at least two pedestrians have been hit in this area. One was just a 10-year-old boy.
One resident, Barbara Mathieson, who lives in the 5th and Main apartments right by the intersection, said she's almost been hit by a car while walking there several times.
Mathieson told News 2 she thinks the issue is speeding, as well as both drivers and pedestrians not paying attention.
However, she argues there's not enough room for pedestrians to cross.
"I was hoping that our current mayor would do something about transportation. That's why I voted for him, but so far, he has done very little," Mathieson said.
The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure said there is a solution in the works.
NDOT says the Main and Gallatin project will make that stretch of road and intersection safer, creating more space for pedestrians.
"We know that one death or injury on our roads is one too many and are committed to eliminating traffic fatalities on our streets," NDOT Communications Director Brendan Sculley said.
The Gallatin Main project began in 2023. NDOT said the project is still in the design and implementation phase.
