FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Williamson County is getting a new farmers market.
Founders Rob and Courtney "Coco" Mitterando are cultivating a space for the community to network at Church Street Farmers Market. The couple moved to the area two years ago and Rob said his company launched a coffee trailer in a vacant parking lot near downtown Franklin about one year ago. During the slow winter months, Rob realized the lot would be a good space for a farmers market.
The Mitterandos said they saw a need for good produce and good food in the Franklin community. Between that and the fact that the community is home to many startups, the founders said they want the market to be a forum for smaller, hyperlocal farms as well as artisans and crafters to launch their businesses. Ultimately, the market will be a space for families to mingle and cultivate a sense of community.
"We talk to locals every day and people want to be able to access something without having to drive to the other side of town," Rob said. "We definitely see this filling a need for the community. We're not going to only have produce but we're going to have artesan bakers, meat producers, poultry, eggs — all the things."
The couple is utilizing a platform called Marketspread to help connect with partners for vendors and agricultural needs.
"The small mom-and-pops — they may not have a space that they can go or are welcome to go," Coco added. "We would like for them to definitely fill out applications — we are looking for vendors as we speak to really make this the perfect space."
The Church Street Farmers Market, which is not affiliated with the Franklin Farmers Market, opens on May 24 at 9 a.m. and is on the corner of 4th Avenue and Church Street. Visitors are encouraged to bring a grocery bag you can fill up with local goods.
