BELLE MEADE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As the debate around license plate readers continues in Nashville, a city within Davidson County is ordering more.
Police in the city of Belle Meade said the tools have helped their officers solve countless crimes and even deter them.
Because they have been so successful, Belle Meade is adding more LPRs across the city.
In February, city commissioners started the conversation to add more LPRs after more residents began asking for them.
The police department hasn't decided exactly where the new cameras will be placed.
They told News 2 they will continue to assess which areas are seeing more traffic as well as more crime.
BMP says the feedback from residents about LPRs has been mostly positive, and they want to do what is best for their citizens.
"It adds safety because—of course—it gives us more coverage throughout the city, but at the same time I do believe it gives residents peace of mind knowing that the city is being monitored the way it is," BMP Lt. Mack Mangrum said.
The department says the funding is coming from the annual budget proposed for the next fiscal year.
