LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Fireworks are a holiday tradition for many in La Vergne, but city leaders are considering changing the window when residents could set them off.

Currently, fireworks can be discharged until 11 p.m. on July 4 and New Year’s Eve. On Tuesday, the city’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen will continue discussing an amendment to their ordinance inspired by a proposal from police extend that would extend that window until 12:30 a.m. or even 1 a.m.

Some leaders said they would support later hours for New Year’s Eve, but not for the Fourth of July.

“I agree with New Year’s Eve. I do not agree with July Fourth,” one city official said during the discussion. “New Year’s Eve is New Year’s Eve, and everyone’s doing their midnight stuff."

Residents who spoke with News 2 with said fireworks are a key part of celebrating.

“I’m a fireworks guy," said Antonio Jerido, a La Vergne resident. "I grew up on this, so it’s my thing."

“They’re loud, pretty — some scary,” visitor Hyat Al-Shmary said.

Both Jerido and Al-Shmary said they believe midnight or later would be a fair time to end fireworks, but Jerido also expressed safety concerns.

“The newer generation, they’re a little reckless,” Jerido said. “... Be as safe as you could.”

The board is expected to vote on an amendment to the ordinance that would extend allowable hours to 12:30 a.m. on New Year's Day at Tuesday’s meeting.
