NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Time is running out for you to get a free tree to help restore Music City's tree canopy.

Root Nashville is giving away three free trees to Nashville homeowners. Since its start, the group has helped plant more than 50,000 trees; their goal is 500,000 by the year 2050.

The group is offering a variety of trees to choose from, including the Southern Magnolia, Persimmon, Black Gum, and Canada Red Chokecherry.

They said much of their inventory has been claimed—except for bald cypress trees.

According to Root Nashville, not many people are familiar with bald cypresses, but the trees are perfect for Nashville's climate.

Many neighborhoods in Nashville currently have a tree deficit, and Root Nashville would like to see more people in those neighborhoods take advantage of the campaign.

"Those areas are Madison, South Nashville, and North Nashville," Jason Sprouls, Urban Forestry Program Manager told News 2. "We always want people in those area to order more trees to make the largest impact as far as closing some of the disparities where our canopy coverage is located in the city."

The deadline to register for the free trees is Aug. 31. Root Nashville volunteers will plant them in the fall.
