GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Goodlettsville commissioner wants to formally codify fireworks rules into law in the city.

Commissioner Jesse Walker said he is sponsoring an ordinance that would specify when and where fireworks can be used within the city limits.

According to Walker, the push for the ordinance came after multiple noise complaints for fireworks around the Fourth of July.

"I heard from many constituents after the 4th of July holiday who were frustrated with fireworks being discharged late at night and many days (or even weeks) after the holiday—disturbing neighbors trying to sleep and causing stress for pets," Walker said on social media.

Walker said further research into the Goodlettsville city codes revealed there was no formal fireworks ordinance in the city.

"Instead, it's interpreted and enforced under the general sound ordinance," Walker said.

His plan is propose an ordinance that specifies when fireworks can be discharged and would "put Goodlettsville in line with some neighboring communities."

The text of the ordinance would limit the use of fireworks without a permit to the hours of 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 3 and July 4, and from 1 p.m. until 1 a.m. on Dec. 31, allowing for both the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve holidays.

Outside of these times, fireworks usage would have to have a permit, subject to "reasonable conditions related to public safety," per the ordinance.

The first reading of the ordinance is planned for the next Goodlettsville Board of Commissioners meeting, which is set for Thursday, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
